The vSphere Supervisor is the built-in control plane of vSphere that brings Kubernetes and modern application management directly into the hypervisor. It provides a consistent API and desired-state management model, allowing you to run and manage Kubernetes clusters, vSphere Pods, and virtual machines side by side on the same infrastructure.
With Supervisor, vSphere becomes an extensible platform — developers and operators can use vSphere Namespaces to define resource boundaries and enable self-service provisioning of modern infrastructure services in a secure and controlled way.

Keeping Supervisor up to date ensures compatibility with newer ESX and NSX versions as well as the latest API schemas used by Kubernetes clusters and DevOps tools.
In earlier versions of vSphere, Supervisor was delivered together with vCenter as part of a single update. Starting with vSphere 9.0, Supervisor is now available as a separate component, giving administrators the flexibility to upgrade or install newer Supervisor versions independently from vCenter. This change simplifies lifecycle management and ensures faster access to the latest Supervisor features and security updates.
Upgrading supervisor is easy and straight forward. VMware provides an official content library that contains the latest vSphere Supervisor images. You can subscribe to this library directly from your vCenter Server to simplify Supervisor installation and future upgrades.
Content Library for vSphere Supervisor Releases:
https://wp-content.vmware.com/supervisor/v1/latest/lib.json
To create a content library, navigate to Menu → Content Libraries → Create.

Specify a name and storage location.

The next step is to configure the content library by subscribing to the mentioned URL and download the content immediately.

Then select to apply security policy to enforces strict validation while importing and synchronizing synchronization of OVF library items.

Specify a storage location for the library contents.

Review the content library settings and complete the creation process to finalize the library setup.

In the next step navigation to the Menu → Supervisor Management→ Content Distribution.

Assign the content library created earlier to the Supervisor configuration so that it can access the subscribed images for upgrades.

The next step is to check for any available Supervisor updates. To do this, navigate to the Updates section. Here there is a higher supervisor version available and by selecting “Apply Updates” the supervisor updates will initiate.

Then run a precheck and upgrade the supervisor.

After the upgrade, the new Supervisor version appears in the configuration view, indicating a successful update.

In the next part of this series, we’ll take a closer look at the Consumption Operators and walk through the process of upgrading them to the latest versions.
